Moving and Handling Products
Mangar International are market leaders in providing equipment to eliminate dangerous manual lifting in care settings. Since inventing the World's first powered portable bathlift in 1981 we have regularly expanded our range of products to offer new and better solutions to common lifting and handling problems.
As well as products to help people with their daily tasks, such as getting out of bed, taking a bath and standing from a chair, we have introduced two products designed specifically for use in care homes where residents have fallen and require assistance standing back up again, the Elk and CAMELlifting cushions.
CAMEL
The CAMEL (Complete Air Moving Elevating Lift) is an air powered lifting chair that raises someone from a lying to a sitting position at the touch of a button.

The Elk is a lifting solution favoured by paramedics internationally. Following the same principles as the CAMEL, the Elk offers a simple lift that is ideal in confined spaces.

Many care homes already have hoisting systems in place and may be sceptical about the benefits adding one of our lifting cushions may bring. To highlight some of the advantages the Elk and CAMEL have over a conventional hoist we have put together a comparison table.

Calling 999 may no longer be an option
In the situation where a resident has fallen, uninjured, and cannot get back up again many care homes would call the emergency services. However, this situation is now considered a non-emergency call out by the ambulance services and a call-out fee is gradually being introduced.
To avoid this fee, and to reduce the amount of time a resident has to remain uncomfortable and distressed on the floor, many care homes are now purchasing an Elk or Camel in order to carry out the lift themselves. Given that an Elk or Camel can now be found in the majority of the UK's ambulances what better alternative is there to calling the emergency services than using the equipment they themselves would turn to? If residents often fall the initial cost of purchasing the Camel or Elk would soon be justified against the money that would have been spent paying the emergency services' call-out fee.
Mrs Beryl Tidbury of Thornton House Residential Home in Ellesmere recently purchased an Elk and was so pleased with it that she wrote to tell us:

"The purchase of an Elk has enabled our residents to be elevated from the floor with a far greater degree of dignity (particularly in public areas) and comfort; in fact they see the whole exercise as an amusing interlude in the day!
The Elk has been used in areas that proved difficult to access with a hoist e.g. small en-suites and the garden, and is light and simple to use, as a consequence the staff have not hesitated to use it and the conventional hoist is now rarely used.
Result: Staff and residents happy, health and safety issues easily addressed, management delighted!
One of the best purchases we have made."

What are the benefits of this revolutionary lifting technique?
Lifting individuals with one of our inflatable cushions offers several major benefits. The low air pressure inflation from our Airflo compressor offers an exceptionally strong lifting capacity that can support anyone in comfort, from the frail to the bariatric resident. In addition, by lifting with air the weight of the equipment is kept to an absolute minimum and the need for heavy and cumbersome mechanical components is eliminated, making our lifting solutions both lightweight and compact.
